The Stuttgart Ricebirds proved why they remain one of the top teams in Class 4A football, pulling away in the second half for a 52-28 victory over the Monticello Billies on Homecoming night at Hyatt Field.
Despite a strong first-half effort and a career night from senior running back Accelus, the Billies couldn’t overcome the balanced offensive attack of the undefeated Ricebirds.
Stuttgart (7-0, 4-0) entered the game as one of the hottest teams in the conference, and their efficiency was on full display from the opening series. The Ricebirds struck first on a nine-yard option pitch to Tyquan Hall, capping an early drive fueled by quarterback Cain Price’s poise and precision. After the extra point, Stuttgart led 7-0.
Monticello (2-5, 1-3) answered in impressive fashion. Starting from their own 27, the Billies leaned on Accelus, who powered through defenders for chunk gains and key first downs. On the drive’s final play, quarterback Jackson Hines slipped around the edge from one yard out to tie the game 7-7 with 1:33 left in the first quarter, igniting the Homecoming crowd.
The Ricebirds quickly regained control early in the second quarter when Price rolled out and found a receiver deep downfield for a touchdown, making it 14-7. But Monticello’s offense refused to back down.
A big completion from Hudson Harvey to Rawls, followed by another strong burst from Accelus, set the Billies up inside the five.
A Stuttgart penalty moved the ball closer, and Hines once again punched it in to make it 14-13 after the extra point attempt sailed wide.
From there, momentum began to shift. Stuttgart capitalized on a blown coverage, as Hall took a short pass 64 yards to the house, extending the Ricebird lead to 21-13 late in the second quarter.
Monticello appeared poised to respond before a costly fumble at midfield halted their drive. The Billies’ defense held firm, forcing a missed field goal just before halftime, but they trailed by eight heading into the locker room.
The turning point came early in the third quarter when a bad snap on Monticello’s opening possession was recovered by Stuttgart deep in Billie territory.
Three plays later, Turner barreled in for a touchdown to push the lead to 28-13.
Monticello’s resilience showed again midway through the third.
Hines directed a determined 50-yard march, highlighted by a 16-yard burst and a punishing goal-line run from Accelus. Hines scored his third touchdown of the night and then connected with Rawls on the two-point try, narrowing the deficit to 28-21.
But each time Monticello clawed closer, Stuttgart had an answer.
Price methodically led another scoring drive, and Hall capped it with a short touchdown run to restore a two-score lead at 35-21.
The Ricebirds tacked on another quick strike before the third quarter ended, a 27-yard touchdown pass to Byers to make it 42-21.
Even down three scores, the Billies kept fighting.
Early in the fourth, Accelus broke free on a dazzling 48-yard touchdown run, his third 200-yard performance of the season.
That cut the lead to 42-28 and gave the Monticello sideline new life.
However, Stuttgart’s composure and depth proved too much down the stretch. A field goal by McKelvey and another Hall touchdown following a fumbled kickoff sealed the 52-28 final.
Despite the loss, Monticello’s offense put together one of its strongest performances of the year.
Accelus was a workhorse, finishing with 234 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Hines accounted for three total scores.
The Billies moved the ball effectively throughout the night but were undone by turnovers and a few costly penalties at key moments.
For Stuttgart, the dynamic duo of Price and Hall continued to shine.
Price extended plays with his legs and arm, while Hall’s versatility in the backfield kept Monticello’s defense guessing all night.
The Billies (2-5, 1-3) will look to rebound next week on the road at Helena-West Helena Central Cougars for as 7 pm kickoff, while the Ricebirds (7-0, 4-0) return home to host conference rival Warren Lumberjacks in a highly anticipated showdown of league heavyweights with a 7 pm kickoff.
