Anticipating the winter storm that was heading its way into Monticello on Friday, the Monticello School District made the determination to move Friday’s scheduled 8-4A Conference contest between the Star City Bulldogs and the Monticello Billies to Thursday night at Billie Arena.
The Billies and Bulldogs would enter the contest with 2-0 records in conference play with the Billes winning two consecutive road games, 54-53 over Hamburg, and a two overtime victory over Watson Chapel, 68-66.
Star City would control the opening tip and would get the first points of the contest on a two by Jaden Turner.
Monticello would get on the board with a single point after Gavin Trotter scored one of two from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs would finish the first quarter with a 12-point, 19-7, lead at the end of the quarter.
The Billies would score 15 points in the second quarter with Christian Webb leading the way with six points.
The Bulldogs would still outscore the Billies in the second quarter, 19-15, to take a 38-22 lead into the halftime break.
Returning from the half, the Bulldogs would put the contest out of reach in the third quarter after outscoring the Billies 29-12 in the quarter to begin the fourth quarter up 67-34 with the final quarter being played under the “Sportsmanship Rule” with a running clock.
Monticello would outscore the Bulldogs in the fourth 11-1 with Jordan McDaniel scoring eight points in the quarter with two three-pointers.
Star City would take the contest 70-45 to hand Monticello their first conference loss of the season.
Leading the way for the Billies would be Christian Webb with 13, Peyton Strickland with nine, and Jordan McDaniel with eight.
Jayden Shaw scored six, Joseph Accules and Nathan Robertson with three, Zaylen Gaston with two, and Gavin Trotter with one.
The Billies will return to Billie Arena on Friday, January 30, to host Crossett with games beginning at 5:30 pm.
The scheduled contest with Warren has been moved to Warren on February 3 at 4 pm.
