The University of Arkansas at Monticello Weevil Baseball team has been voted as the #1 ranked team in the Great American Conference in the preseason rankings.
The Weevils received 115 points including six first place votes in the preseason coaches poll with Harding University in the second spot with 108 total votes and four first place votes.
Rounding out the top five were Arkansas Tech, Southern Arkansas, and Henderson State.
The Weevils have also been ranked at #19 in the American Baseball Association preseason national poll.
The Weevils are coming off the 2024 season where the team captured both the Great American Conference regular season championship and the Great American Conference Tournament Championship, followed by a win in the central region pod that gave the Weevils a trip to the super regional for the first time in school history.
The Weevils would fall to Central Missouri in the super regional to end the season.
The Weevils have also had three Weevils selected as preseason All-Americans with first team selection Camden Tanner, second team selection Nelson Mercado, and third team selections Kirk Woolf.
Tanner enters his sophomore season after one of the best freshman seasons in school history that had Tanner earning second team All-American honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and third team selections from the ABCA and D2CCA.
Tanner finished the season batting .423 with 90 hits, 13 home runs, 17 doubles, 49 RBI, and 62 runs scored.
Mercado earned GAC Honorable Mention honors last season after posting a 3.24 earned run average with 10 saves in 26 contests striking out 59.
Mercado will be a senior in the upcoming season.
Woolf returns to the Weevils after batting .341 last season in 50 games.
Woolf had two triples last season with 12 home runs and and 16 doubles with a .659 slugging percentage.
The Weevils finished the 2024 season with an overall record of 35-24 with a Great American Conference record of 23-10.
The Weevils will begin the 2025 season on Friday, January 31, travelling to Houston, Texas to play at Daikin Park, the home of the Houston Astros, in the Houston Astros Winter Invitational.
The Weevils will open the invitational on Friday against Mississippi, a team that the Weevils were defeated by twice last season.
First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 10 am.
The Weevils will face the team that knocked the out of the super regional last season, the University of Central Missouri.
The Weevils and Central Missouri are set for action on Saturday, February 1, at 1:30 pm.
The Weevils will face their final opponent of the WInter Invitational on Sunday, February 2, facing Ashland University.
It will be the first meeting of the two schools.
First pitch is set for 10 am.
The Weevils will play their first contest at home of the 2025 season at the newly named Weevil Field at Union Bank Park on Saturday, February 8, in a double-header against Missouri Western State University in a double-header beginning at 2 pm with the second contest of the day at 5 pm that see the Weevils play at home under the lights for the first time in school history.
