Blossoms fall short 79-76 at home against Henderson State

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Blossoms would drop their eighth consecutive contest on Saturday afternoon at Steelman Fieldhouse hosting Henderson State University.

The Blossoms last saw the winning side of the scoreboard on January 17 at home against the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Lady Bulldogs in a 71-59 win.

Since that time, the Blossoms have lost eight straight beginning with a two overtime loss to Southern Arkansas University, 77-75, a 66-49 loss to Southern Nazarene, 65-60 to Oklahoma Baptist University, 57-52 to Southeastern Oklahoma State University, 65-48 to East Central, 75-69 at Arkansas Tech, and 56-48 at SAU.

Returning to Steelman Fieldhouse on Saturday, hosting Henderson State, the Blossoms would get on the board first on a two point shot by Jenna Warden.

After Alyssa Batton tied the contest at four, the Reddies would score the next six points to go up 10-4.

The Reddies would maintain the lead until a layup by Keira WIlliams put the Blossoms up 19-18 to end the first quarter.

UAM would lead for most of the second quarter, with their biggest lead being 12 points.

Henderson would begin to cut into the Blossoms lead, tying the contest 38-38 with 1:23 remaining in the half.

Both teams would exchange the lead in the final minute of the contest with Henderson retaking the lead with 12 seconds remaining in the half to take the 42-20 lead at the break.

Henderson would continue to lead the Blossoms for most of the third quarter with the lead extending to six points on several occasions until the Blossoms came back to take lead 61-60 on a pair of successful free throws by Aylissa Batton.

Henderson would tie the contest at the end of the quarter on a free throw to head into the final quarter of regulation tied at 61.

The score would remain close throughout the fourth quarter with the Blossoms and Reddies tying the contest four times in the quarter with the last tied score being at 74 with 2:23 remaining.

Henderson would break the tie and would extend the lead to three points with 1:22 remaining in the contest.

The Blossoms would cut the lead to one point on a layup by Batton to make the score 77-76 with 40 seconds remaining.

Henderson would connect on a layup with 12 seconds remaining to set up the three-point, 79-76, victory.

With the loss, the Blossoms fall to 6-18 overall with a 1-17 record in the Great American Conference.

Leading the way against Henderson would be Jenna Warden with 23 points followed by Alyssa Batton with 19 points.

Alindsey Long would also score in double-digits with 12 points and would be honored before the afternoon’s contest with Henderson State for becoming just the 21st player in Blossoms history to reach 1,000 points scored. 

Long is currently 20th all-time with 1,076 points.

Taleigha Ealy and Opal Hardy scored six with Keira Williams and Brilynn Findley with five.

The Blossoms will travel to Oklahoma for the next two contests with the Blossoms travelling to Weatherford, Oklahoma on Thursday, February 19, to face Southwestern Oklahoma State University and then to Alva, Oklahoma to face Northwestern State Oklahoma State University on Saturday.
