Weevils clinch GAC Baseball Championship Tournament berth

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Weevil Baseball team travelled to Durant, Oklahoma this past week to face the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm.

SEOSU entered the three game series with a 22-16 overall record and a 13-11 record in Great American Conference play.

The Weevils came into the contest on Friday after dropping a non conference contest in Cleveland, Mississippi on Tuesday night to Delta State University, 8-7.

In game one of the double-header on Friday, April 10, The Savage Storm would connect for three home runs in the first inning to put SEOSU up 9-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

After holding the Weevils scoreless in the top of the second inning, SEOSU would add another run in the bottom of the second on their fourth home run of the game to go up 10-0.

UAM would make a run in the later innings after scoring one run in the top of the third, UAM would add four runs in the top of the sixth and two more runs in the the top of the ninth, but would drop game one 10-7.

UAM pitcher Bryce Louis would take the loss in the contest, his first of the season falling to 3-1.

The Weevils would go down 4-0 after the first inning in game two, but would come back to score a run in the fourth and fifth innings followed by a four run inning in the sixth to take game two 6-5.

With the win, the Weevils became the first team to clinch a berth in the GAC Championship Tournament.

Returning for the final game of the series on Saturday, the Weevils would fall behind early after scoring a run in the first, SEOSU would score six runs in the bottom of the second for a 6-1 lead and would go on to take the series with a 9-6 win.

Despite the series loss, the Weevils are still currently at the top of the GAC standings with Arkansas Tech second.

UAM returns to Union Bank Park on Friday to begin a three game series with East Central.
