Weevils comeback to defeat SWOSU 60-57 for third consecutive win

After ending their nine-game losing streak on the road in Oklahoma, the Weevils have won two more contests to bring their win streak to three games. 

Scheduled to return to Steelman Fieldhouse on Thursday. February 2, the Weevils and Blossoms would be forced to reschedule their games against Northwestern Oklahoma State University to Friday night due to the winter storm that knocked out electricity to the majority of Drew County. 

The game would also be moved to Magnolia to be played on the campus of Southern Arkansas University. 

The scheduled contests against Southwestern Oklahoma State University that was scheduled to be played on Saturday at Steelman Fieldhouse was rescheduled for 3pm fior the Blossoms and 5pm for the Weevils. Both contests were still held at UAM in Steelman Fieldhouse. 

In Magnolia on Friday, the Weevils would get on the board first against NWOSU on a layup by Josh Denton and would extend their lead to 4-0 on a layup by Cole Anderson. 

A pair of free throws would get the Rangers on the board.

The Weevils would hold the lead until 9:46 remaining in the half when the Rangers would take a one-point, 18-17, lead on a jumper by Malik Parsons.

UAM would retake the lead with 7:18 on the clock on a three-pointer by Josh Denton that made the score 25-23 in favor of the Weevils. 

UAM would maintain the lead for the remainder of the half, holding a three-point advantage at the sound of the buzzer, 36-33.

The game would remain close for the majority of the second half with UAM extending the lead to 10 points, 54-44, on a three-pointer by Mario Fantina with 13:07 remaining in the contest and to 11 points on a jumper by Fantina with 11:55 on the clock.

The Rangers would cut into the Weevil lead, but UAM would hold off the Rangers to take a four-point, 80-76, victory.

Leading the way for the Weevils was Josh Denton and Issac Jackson who each scored 22 points. 

Cole Anderson added 10 points, Mario Fantina and Walter Covington with eight, and Ray Price scoring six.

Timur Krupalija rounded out the scoring with four points.

Returning on Saturday to host the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs, the Weevils would score the first four points of the contest before Southwestern was able to get on the board. 

The game would remain close with each team swapping the lead until Southwestern took the lead with 11:17 remaining in the half. 

From that point, the Bulldogs would continue to add to their lead, extending the lead to the largest of the half being 18 points before taking a 16 point advantage with a 42-26 lead at the break.

The Bulldogs would continue to lead the Weevils by double-digits for most of the second half, but the Weevils would slowly cut into the lead, cutting the lead to six points with 10:00 remaining in the contest on a layup by Timur Kruplija. 

Issac Jackson would hit a jumper with 3:47 left in the contest to give the Weevils a one-point lead, 54-53.

The teams would exchange the lead until Jackson connected on a pair of free throws to seal the contest for the Weevils in a comeback win, 60-57.

Issac Jackson led the way for the Weevils with 21 points followed by Mario Fantina with nine points. 

Ray Price and Timur Krupalija each scored eight points with Cole Anderson adding six. 

Walter Covington scored five with Josh Denton rounding out the scoring with three points. 

With the win, the Weevils have won three consecutive contests, improving their overall record to 8-13 and to 4-11 in Great American Conference play. 

The Weevils will be on the road for the next three contests.

The Weevils will travel to Ada, Oklahoma on Thursday to face East Central for a 7:30pm tip followed by a contest against Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma on Saturday with a 3pm tip.

The Weevils will travel to Magnolia to face Southern Arkansas on Monday at 7:30pm.
