Weevils defeat Arkansas Tech 8-5 to win GAC Championship

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils finished the regular season in a three-way tie for the Great American Conference Championship of Harding and Arkansas Tech and after comparing the record against the next highest ranked conference finisher, Henderson State, the Boll Weevils became the number one seed heading into the GAC Championship Tournament.

After defeating Oklahoma Baptist to continue on to the double elimination portion of the GAC Tournament, the Weevils would face #5 Southern Arkansas University to begin the tournament.

SAU would go up 1-0 in the top of the sixth inning but the Weevils would get a run in the bottom of the seventh and eight for a 2-1 lead but  the Muleriders tied the contest in the top of the ninth inning. 

In the bottom of the ninth, Aidan Garrett would fly out to left field with Chaz Poppy crossing the plate for the run and the 3-2 win. 

Returning on Friday to face #3 Harding University, the Weevils would get on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

UAM would go up 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning with Harding scoring three in the top of the eighth, but the Weevils would hold one for the 7-6 win to hrad to the championship game against #2 Arkansas Tech.

Tech would force a second contest on Saturday after taking game one 9-3.

In game two, Chaz Poppy would connect for a three-run home run in the bottom of the first but Tech would tie the contest in the top of the second. 

Poppy would hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the third for a 5-3 lead wit the Weevils adding a run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the eighth for an 8-3 lead. 

Tech added two runs in the top of the ninth but Nelson Mercado would lose out the game to give the Weevils the Championship win. 

UAM will now move to the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament in Joplin, Missouri, facing Arkansas Tech on Thursday at 1 pm.
