Weevils drop third straight contest with losses at Steelman

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils returned from a road trip through Oklahoma that saw the Weevils splitting their contests with a 68-57 win over the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs and a loss to the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers, 81-63, for a pair of contests at home in Steelman Fieldhouse.

Hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Thursday, February 8, the Weevils would get on the board to start the contest on a layup by Timur Krupalija.

Southeastern would get the next two baskets to take the lead followed by six consecutive points by the Weevils on a jumper by Issac Jackson and layups by Wesley Booker and Krupalija to retake the lead 8-6.

Both teams would go back and forth for the next several possessions until Southeastern took the lead with 13.35 remaining on the half.

Southeastern would extend the lead to double-digits with 10:26 on the clock, taking a 12 point, 24-12, lead.

Southeastern extended their lead to their biggest margin of the half with 7:39 remaining in the half with a 15 point, 31-16.

Southeastern continued to lead by double-digits until Zane Nelson connected on a jumper with 4:44 left on the clock, cutting the lead to nine points, 33-24.

Ty’Reonn King hit a layup on an offensive rebound with 1:38 on the clock to cut the lead to six.

After putting the lead back 11 points, UAM would cut the lead back to eight on a three pointer by Zane Nelson with an assist from Ty’Reonn King to make the score 44-36 at the half.

Southeastern began to pull away from the Weevils in the second half with their biggest lead of the contest being 23 points on two different occasions in the second half.

Southeastern would go on to defeat the Weevils by 18 points, 85-67.

The Weevils were led in scoring by Issac Nelson with 28 points followed by Zane Nelson with 14 points. 

Wesley Booker added nine points, Cole Anderson and Timur Krupalija with six, and Ty’Reonn King with two.

Alex Brogdon and Donovan Cooper rounded out the scoring with one point each. 

The Weevils returned to action on Saturday, February 10, hosting the East Central Tigers. 

East Central would begin the contest with a 6-0 run before the Weevils connected on a jumper by Issac Jackson.

Ty’Reonn King would connect on a three to cut the Tiger lead to 8-5 followed by two free throws by Jackson to cut the Tiger lead to one point. 

With 11:08 remaining in the half, Zane Nelson would tie the contest at 10 on a three pointer followed by a jumper in the paint to take the lead 12-10.

East Central would tie the contest at 12, with King connecting on a layup to give the Weevils a 14-12 lead.

The Weevils would score the next four points to increase their lead to 18-12 with 6:59 remaining in the half.

With 2:55 remaining in the half, Josh Denton would give the Weevils a 10 point lead, 29-19, on a three pointer.

East Central would get two free throws with Issac Jackson scoring the last points of the half to give UAM a 10 point, 31-21, lead at the half.

The Weevils were able to keep their lead around 10 points for the first six minutes of the second half.

East Central would cut the lead to five points, 38-33, with 13:54 remaining in the half. 

With 6:59 on the clock, the Tigers would tie the contest at 47.

Two free throws by Zane Nelson and a jumper by Ty’Reonn King would give the Weevils a four point lead, but East Central would come back to tie the contest at 53 with 2:13 remaining in the contest. 

East Central would finish the contest connecting on two single free throw shots to take the 55-53 victory to hand the Weevils their third consecutive loss.

Issac Jackson led the way with 16 points followed by Zane Nelson with 13 and Ty’Reonn King with a season high 10 points. 

Josh Denton and Cole Anderson rounded out the scoring with seven points each.

Wesley Booker led the Weevils with 12 rebounds and leads the team in rebounds with 141 total for the season.

The Weevils will travel to Magnolia on Thursday, February 15, to face the Muleriders with the Weevils set to tip off around 7:30 pm.

The Weevils will return to Steelman Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 17, hosting Henderson State University with a scheduled tip off to begin around 3 pm.
