Weevils get weekend sweep over Northwestern Oklahoma State

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils extended their win streak to four games after a weekend sweep over the Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers.

The Weevils first win of the streak would come on Tuesday March 18, in a 7-0 win over nationally ranked #15 Harding University.

Roc Hawthorne would record a homerun with Chase Cripps and Cade Cancilla, Chaz Poppy, and Eli Marvin all recording doubles in the contest.

In the first game of Friday’s double-header against Northwestern, the Weevils would send Connor Irvine to the mound to begin the series.

Both teams would remain scoreless through the first two innings before the Rangers got on the board first, scoring a single run in the top of the third and adding another single run in the top of the fourth inning.

The Weevils would get a single run across the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning after Chaz Poppy singled to score Kirk Woolf to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Weevils would tie the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning after a ground out to second base by Justin Santoyo allowed Poppy to score the tying run.

The rangers would retake the lead in the top of the seventh inning after scoring a run to go up 3-2.

With the Rangers up 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Weevils would get a sacrifice fly to center field by Roc Hawthorne that would score Logan Jones to tie the contest to force extra innings.

Nelson Mercado would hold the Rangers scoreless in the top of the 10th inning and in the bottom of the inning, the Weevils would load the bases with one out which allowed Cade Cancilla to single down the right field line to allow pinch runner Kyle Tolley to score the winning run for the 4-3 final.

Nelson Mercado would be awarded the win after relieving Irvine for the final 3.2 innings.

Mercado would walk five batters but would strike out seven without allowing a run.

The Weevils would get started faster in the second game of the Friday double-header, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to give Maxim Mrakovcic a cushion to work with from the mound.

Mrakovcic would allow a single run in top of the second inning with the Weevils scoring in the bottom of the inning after Howthorne scored on a wild pitch.

The Weevils added three in the bottom of the third inning after Logan Jones connected on a triple for 2 RBI and a line out by Hawthorne to score Jones for a 7-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Cade Cancilla would connect for a double that would score Chase Cripps to give the Weevils an 8-1 lead.

Northwestern would get three runs in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 8-4 with the Weevils getting the final out to secure the victory.

Mrakovcic would pitch 5.1 innings allowing  one run on five hits, walking three and striking out six. 

Mrakovcic improved to 5-1 on the season with the win.

Roc Hawthorne would lead the way for the Weevils at the plate going 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Logan Jones and Cade Cancilla would each go 1 for two with 2 RBI.

Returning for the final game of the series on Saturday, March 22, the Weevils would start Bryce Luis on the mound.

Louis would give up a double for the only baserunner in the first inning and in the bottom of the first inning, Chase Cripps would connect on his team leading sixth homerun on the season for 3 RBI scoring Kirk Woolf and Chaz Poppy for the 3-0 lead.

The Rangers would get two runs in the top of the third inning but the Weevils would add a run in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 4-2.

UAM extended their lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning on doubles by Camden Tanner and Chaz Poppy.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Weevils would get to 10 run rule after a pair of home runs.

Both Aidan Garrett and Kirk Woolf would connect for two-run home runs to give the Weevils the 13-2 win.

Luis would get the win in the contest improving to 3-2 on the season. Luis would pitch for five innings, allowing two runs on six hits.

The Weevils would get doubles from Camden Tanner, Chaz Poppy, and Justin Santoyo and home runs from Chase Cripps, Aidan Garrett, and Kirk Woolf.

The Weevils will host Arkansas Tech on Wednesday, March 26, at 3 pm and will travel to Harding University on Friday, March 28, to begin a three game series with the Bison with first pitch on Friday at 6 pm.
