Weevils snap nine game losing streak with 68-58 win over Oklahoma Baptist

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils began their second road trip to the state of Oklahoma with an opening contest in Bethany, Oklahoma against the Great American Conference leading Southern Nazarene University.

The Crimson Storm came into Thursday’s contest with an overall record of 15-3 and a Great American Conference record of 11-1 with their only loss coming to Arkansas Tech.

For the Weevils, UAM entered the contest tied for the last spot in the conference with Harding University with an overall record of 5-13 and a conference record of 1-11 having lost their least eight contests. 

The Crimson Storm would get on the board to begin the contest with a three-pointer, but UAM’s Issac Jackson would get the Weevils on the board on a jumper for a 3-2 score. 

Jackson would give the Weevils a one-point, 7-6, lead with 15:30 remaining in the half. It would be the final lead the Weevils would have in the contest.

SNU would go on to grow their lead to double-digits in the first half, ending the half with a 20-point, 35-15, lead.

The Crimson Storm would continue to add to their lead throughout the second half with the biggest lead being 38 points before taking the 73-37 victory, handing the Weevils their ninth consecutive loss. 

Leading the way for the Weevils was Issac Jackson with 20 points followed by Cole Anderson with eight. 

Ray Price added six with Edwin Lewis rounding out the scoring with three points. 

Remaining in Oklahoma, the Weevils would travel to Shawnee, Oklahoma to face the Oklahoma Baptist Bison who are currently sixth in the GAC with a conference record of 7-6.

The Weevils and Bison would go back and forth for the majority of the first half until a three pointer by Issac Jackson pulled the Weevils within one point, 21-20, followed by a three by Mario Fantina to take the lead 23-21 with 7:17 remaining in the half.

The Weevils would continue to lead for the remainder of the first half, building their lead to double-digits, taking a 12-point, 37-25, at the half.

The Weevils continued to lead in the second half with their biggest lead of the contest being 16 points on a Josh Denton layup.

Oklahoma Baptist would work their way back into the contest, cutting the Weevils lead to four points, 55-51, with 6:58 remaining in the game. 

UAM would counter the Oklahoma Baptist comeback attempt by increasing their lead back to double-digits, going on a 9-0 run for a 68-54 lead with 2:52 remaining in the contest. 

The Weevils would not relinquish their double-digit advantage for the remainder of the contest, defeating the Bison by 10-points, 68-58, to snap their nine game skid. 

Cole Anderson would lead the Weevils with 15 points followed by Issac Jackson with 14 points. 

Mario Fantina added 12 points with Josh Denton and Ray Price scoring 10 points each. Walter Covington rounded out the scoring with seven points. 

With the win the Weevils improved to 6-13 overall and 2-12 in Great American Conference play.

The Blossoms would also travel to Oklahoma, playing first against Southern Nazarene, looking to get back into the win column after losing their previous two contests. 

Against Southern Nazarene, the Blossoms would fall behind in the first quarter 12-9, and would go into the half tailing 27-21. 

SNU would continue to lead throughout the second half, defeating the Blossoms 59-46.

Joi Montgomery led the Blossoms with 13 points followed by six point performances by Nyah Banks, Bailey Harris, and Azaria Hulbert.

Taylor East and Aeryn Hawkins scored four, Alexys Grice and Tori Hamilton with three, and Alindsey Long with one. 

The Blossoms would drop their fourth consecutive contest against Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday.

The Blossoms would trail by five points at the half, 31-26.

OBU would pull away from the Blossoms in the third quarter, outscoring the Blossoms 23-15 in the quarter, but the Blossoms would cut the lead to seven points in the fourth quarter, but OBU would be able to hold off the Blossoms for a 67-58 win.

Bailey Harris led the Blossoms with 13 points followed by Joi Montigomery with nine. Azaria Hulbert and Aeryn Hawkins scored eight, Alindsey Long with seven, Tori Hamilton with six, Laia Balcells scoring four, Cyarah Kensmil with two, and Taylor East rounding out the scoring with one point.
