The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils wrapped up the 2025 regular season this past weekend on the road in Magnolia facing the conference #2 ranked Southern Arkansas Muleriders.
SAU and UAM entered the final series of the regular season battling for the second seed in the Great American Conference Tournament.
Beginning the three-game series with a double-header on Friday, April 25, the Weevils would send Connor Irvine to the mound in game one.
The Weevils would get the first crack at the plate, with Roc Hawthorne drawing a lead off walk.
Kirk Woolf would reach on the next at bat on a fielder’s choice that saw Hawthorne out at second base.
Chaz Poppy would come to the plate and would start in the hole with an 0-1 count before sending the next pitch over the right field wall for the two-run home run that would score Woolf.
Justin Santoyo and Camden Tanner would draw consecutive walks, but the next two batters would record the final outs of the inning with the Weevils leading 2-0.
The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when SAU would get on the board with two outs when Clay Burrows would homer to right field to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Mule riders would add their next run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Brandon Nicoll to tie the contest at 2-2.
Southern Arkansas would get the go ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Burrows second solo shot of the day to give the Muleriders the 3-2 lead.
SAU would get UAM out in order to close out the game in the top of the ninth to secure the 3-2 win.
With the win, Southern Arkansas would secure the second seed heading into the GAC Championship Tournament.
Connor Irvine would take the loss for the Weevils in the contest falling to 6-5 on the season.
Returning for game two of the double-header the Weevils would go down in order in the top of the first inning to begin the contest.
Maxim Mrakovcic would take the mound for the Weevils and find himself in a 1-0 hole after an RBI single by sAU’s Nicoll.
UAM would take the lead in the top of the second inning.
After recording the first out of the inning, Camden Tanner would draw a walk followed by Elijah Nichols being hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
Aidan Garrett would connect for a double to score Tanner followed by a sacrifice fly by Cade Cancilla to score Nichols to take the 2-1 lead.
Mrakovcic would pitch the complete game striking out six batters as the Weevils would take the contest 2-1.
Mrakovcic would improve his season record to 8-2.
The Weevils would return on Saturday for the final game of the regular season.
After a scoreless first inning the Weevils offense would come alive in the top of the second inning.
After Elijah Nichols was hit by a pitch, Aidan Garrett would draw a walk, followed by a single by Cade Cancilla to load the bases.
Will Owens would connect for a single to score Garrett and Nichols for the first runs of the inning.
After the second out of the inning, Roc Hawthorne would single to score Cancilla.
Camden Tanner would single to load the bases with Chaz Poppy taking a 2-2 count before connecting for a grand slam to give the Weevils a 7-0 lead.
UAM added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning after a walk to Will Owens followed by a two-run home run by Kyle Tolley to increase the lead to 9-0.
SAU would score five runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 9-6, with UAM holding the score until the end of the contest.
Tyler Bribiescas would get the win of the Weevils, improving to 4-1 on the season.
With the win, the Weevils secure the third seed heading into the GAC Championship Tournament in the double-elimination format.
The Weevils will face Henderson State University on Thursday, May 1, at David Allen Ballpark in Enid, Oklahoma with a 8 pm first pitch scheduled in the second bracket.
HSU was 4-1 in the regular season against UAM and enters the tournament as the sixth seed.
