Weevils drop series on the road at Southern Nazarene University

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevil baseball team came up short on the road in a three game series in conference play against Southern Nazarene University this past weekend in Bethany, Oklahoma.

UAM would lead off the inning with a strikeout followed by a solo home run by Chaz Poppy to give the Weevils a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Connor Irvine got the call to start the contest for the Weevils and would pitch a scoreless inning with SNU leaving two stranded on the bases.

UAM would pick up two runs in the top of the second inning.

Cade Cancilla would single to right field to score Kirk Wolfe and Roc Hawthorne grounding out to first to score Aidan Garrett to give the Weevils a 3-0 lead.

SNU would come back to score eight runs in the contest, scoring  a run in the third, four in the fourth, and three in the sixth to take the 8-3 win.

Irvine would fall to 4-1 on the season.

In Game Two of the series on Saturday, the Weevils would get on the board in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs. 

SNU would get a run back in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-1.

UAM added two runs in the top of the second inning to extend the lead to 5-1, but SNU would get three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 5-4.

After adding a single run in the top of the third, Camden Tanner would connect for a solo home run to give the Weevils a 7-4 lead.

SNU added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning with UAM adding a run in the top of the seventh to give the Weevils an 8-6 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Crimson Storm would connect on a walk off three run home run to give Southern Nazarene a 9-8 victory.

Nelson Mercado would take the loss for the Weevils to fall to 1-2 on the season. 

Returning for the third game of the series and the second in the Saturday double-header, the Weevils would get four runs in the top of the first inning with Cancilla hitting a single to right field to score two runs and a two-run shot by Parker Dorrance for the 4-0 lead.

SNU would get a run in the bottom of the first but UAM would come back in the top of the second to score three runs on  a three-run home run by Chaz Poppy.

Gunner Haskins would connect on a double in the top of the third to score a run followed by home runs by Garrett and Cancilla and Dorrance scoring on an error to give the Weevils a 13-1 lead.

SNU added a run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 13-2.

UAM would score five more runs in the contest, getting two runs in the top of the sixth with three runs in the top of the seventh.

SNU would get one more run in the contest with UAM taking the 18-3 win.

The Weevils will return to UAM on Wednesday, March 27, for two non conference contests against Ouachita Baptist beginning at 1 pm.

UAM will be on the road at Russellville beginning on Friday, March 29, at 6 pm and a double-header on Saturday at 1 pm facing Arkansas Tech.
