Weevils get GAC sweep over Henderson State University Reddies

The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils looked to bounce back in conference play after losing their series against Arkansas Tech University and dropping a single contest against Southern Arkansas University for their third consecutive loss hosting the Henderson State University Reddies with a single contest on Friday, April 5, and a double-header on Saturday, April 6.

In the opening contest on Friday, Connor Irvine would get the call on the mound to start the series. 

After sitting the Reddies down in order in the top of the first inning, UAM would score four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Chaz Poppy would hit a double to score Camden Tanner and Roc Hawthorne.

Aidan Garrett would connect for a single for two RBI scoring Poppy and Kirk Woolf.

Henderson State would get a run back in the top of the third inning, but a Woolf double scored Chase Cripps in the bottom of the inning to give UAM a 5-1 lead.

The Weevils would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Cripps connecting for a single to center field to score Tanner and Hawthorne to push the Weevils lead to 7-1.

Henderson State would get a run in the top of the fifth, one run in the top of the sixth, and one in the top of the seventh inning to cut the Weevil lead to 7-4.

Woolf would connect for a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to increase the Weevil lead to 8-4.

The Weevils would put the contest away in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring three runs in the inning.

Tanner would double to center to score Hawthorne, Poppy would ground out to score Tanner, and a double by Cripps scored Cade Cancilla for the 11-4 win.

Irvine would improve his record to 6-1 after pitching six innings in the contest.

The Weevils would return for the first game of a double-header on Saturday afternoon.

Maxim Mrakovcic would get the start for the Weevils and would get the first three Reddie batters of the contest out for a three batters inning. 

UAM would have one baserunner in the bottom of the inning but could not get a run in the inning. 

Mrakovcic would get another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second as well in the third inning. 

UAM was also not able to get a run in the two innings as the teams entered the fourth inning tied 0-0.

Henderson would break the tie in the top of the fourth inning scoring one run.

After holding UAM scoreless in the bottom of the inning, Henderson would increase their lead in the top of the fifth after getting a single run in the inning for a 2-0 lead. 

The Weevils would get on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning after Cancilla led off the inning being hit by a pitch.

Cancilla would advance to third on a double by Cripps and would score on a ground out by Woolf.

UAM took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning after scoring two runs in the inning to get the 4-2 win.

In game two of the double-header, it would take two innings before either team got on the board with the Weevils scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning. 

Hawthorne would score the first run on a balk followed by Tanner scoring on a single by Poppy.

Henderson would get one run in the top of the fourth inning with UAM getting two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two RBI double by Woolf that scored Tanner and Hawthorne to give the Weevils a 4-1 lead.

Henderson State would come back in the top of the seventh inning to score three runs to tie the contest 4-4.

With the game tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Woolf would lead off for the Weevils, reaching first base after being hit by a pitch. 

Aidan Garrett would ground out to the pitcher but Woolf would advance to second on the play.

Parker Dorrance would connect for a walk off single up the middle of the field that allowed Woolf to score from second base to give the Weevils the 5-4 win and series sweep.

With the win, the Weevils improve to 20-17 overall on the season and to 16-8 in Great American Conference play and are currently sitting at the top of the conference with Arkansas Tech and Northwestern Oklahoma State University who the Weevils will face on the road this weekend for a three game series.
